Marvel vs DC Debate (Movies) Wonder-Woman-Rocket-Raccoon

With the MASSIVE success of the latest Marvel films, we've seen movies that break the sterotypes of Super Hero movies. Avengers proves that you can balance multiple heroes from various comics in a single movie without making any of them a background character or a waste of time; Captain America gives us a more gritty, serious movie compared to the wise cracking but action packed Iron Man. Guardians of the Galaxy takes this concept even further showing us that a sci-fi space action comedy can be fantastic.

DC on the other hand has really only tiptoed in their universes. The Dark Knight Trilogy is one of the greatest "Realistic" superheroes movies ever made (despite #3 being the worst of the trilogy) while Man of Steel resurrected Superman and made him relevant again. However we've seen that DC is very wary when bringing their other heroes to the big screen (sticking to the TV with Green Arrow and Flash).

Why do you think this is? For me it is because DC is based more in Realism - that is realistic settings and darker, more psychological characters whereas Marvel is a lot flashier with bright colors and more wacky tones to it.

Basically I see it as DC = Mortal Kombat and Marvel = Street Fighter.

As such, DC is more about character development and psychology whereas Marvel is character development with action upon action.

What do you think?

No. I wouldn't say DC is inherently more realistic, not at all. They have just as many completely ludicrous properties as Marvel. The problem with WB seems to be that they want to catch more lighting in their bottles but that simply won't happen. They want more TDK tier everything, they want more Nolan-esque everything but that isn't exactly the best thing to do, especially if Nolan himself isn't actually at the helm. Man of Steel was good but it did have flaws.

Marvel, though arguably playing it safe, took somewhat of a risk with Guardians and it is absolutely paying off. WB should take note.

As a side note, Marvel is playing off a specific, if not strict, formula that all of their phase 2 movies seem to be following. While I very much enjoyed Guardians, it was the first time I actually noticed that I was getting a bit weary of said formula. Each movie has been thematically the same movie with the only exception being Cap 2 because that movie straight up said "FUCK YOU!" to the MCU and broke everything.

And I don't like your analogy.

By realistic I mean the primary DC heroes are not these mutants with claws or psycho paths who can break the 4th wall, or time traveling mutants from the future. Most of the characters are basic. Of course, I may be over simplifying it as most my DC knowledge is on Batman and SM though I do know enough of the justice league. I dunno. I just feel that the DC universe was always more grounded compared to Marvels.

And by MK and SF - I mean SF is always light and bright and MK is dark and gritty Razz

And what are these "Phases" I see marvel fans talking about *headtilt*

Phase 1 of the MCU was Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 1 and 2, Thor and Cap all culminating with The Avengers. Phase 2 is Thor 2, Cap 2, Iron Man 3, Guardians leading to Avengers 2. Phase 3 will begin after that and lead into Avengers 3.

Ah. I think the Phase thing is good because we have never had a movie franchise from different stories tie tofether to one massive film before.

you know it's hard for me to pick which one is better, I love Watchmen and Batman but yet Wolverine is my favorite X-Men, dat Hugh Jackman, but in all honesty, I want to see Guardians of the Galaxy I didn't even know it was a comic, it's cool that Disney/Marvel made a movie of a comic that is a little less known but will that really help them in the long run?

I'd say so seeing as they're most likely saving Thanos for Avengers 3. They will need EVERYONE if they even want to hope they can stop Thanos.
