The Ace Attorney series are set in Japan, however the original games stories did not center to much on it, thus when the game was first localized they changed the setting to America. However this got weird when later games in the series had many Japanese exclusive elements, as it meant translations really, really had to stretch to justify it being set in America, even though it was now obvious that the game should, and is in fact set in Japan.

Or for another analogy, imagine playing a game that is supposed to be st in Japan, yet for some reason the Washington monument and white-house can be seen in the background.
