Most Shocking Character Deaths
So I was wondering what are the most shocking character deaths you've experienced in something. By shocking, I mean like it was unexpected or sad or something of that ilk. Let's discuss them in this thread. I'll set some guidelines and I kinda have one rule. That being that it couldn't come at the end of a story. Like, that could not have been part of the conclusion. I want to use some examples, but I can't think of anything that everyone has certainly seen....well let's use the death of Darth Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi as an example. Not that it was shocking or surprising to me, but that was part of the conclusion of the series and essentially was part of the "wrap up." I would say using the death of Obi Wan in A New Hope would suffice as an example of something that's acceptable.
Now, since these can be pretty damn spoilerish, I'll give ya'll a "template" to post your choices under.
Example:
Series/story/movie/game/etc
[spoiler*]The character that died and how they did so in spoiler tags[*spoiler]
Your reaction to it.
------------------------
I'll get it started with a couple of choices from anime, since that's what started the idea for me. There are so many places I can go, but these are in my head and I would like to see others participate before flooding it with my choices. Anyhow...:
1. Code Geass - 2 characters, one from season one and one from season 2
My reaction to these, while not straight up surprise, though there was some of that more so in the second one, was mainly sadness. Both of these deaths were so fucking tragic, I teared up for them. There's only one other death that I would say impacted me as much, but that doesn't really count towards this particular thread's point.
2. Fullmetal Alchemist(first series)
This one was one of the first ones to really get me. I was fucking shocked, I didn't see it coming at all and it depressed. It's been so long since I saw it, so I can't really recall if it made me cry.
There are more I want to choose, but this'll be it for now. What's you peeps opinion on these, if you've seen them obviously. Also, post your own choices.

- Spoiler:
- Euphy's death in season 1 wasn't a shock in and of itself. What happened leading up to it, though, you could say was. Her death was inevitable after all that. Obviously she dies from blood loss after Lelouch/Zero shoots her after going on the rampage he accidently ordered her to go on.
Shirley's death in season 2 actually surprised me a little. I guess I just didn't see it coming at that moment. I hated Rolo for killing her and then makinng it look like suicide(self inflicted gun shot wound).

- Spoiler:
- Hughes death - I think he was killed by Lust, I don't recall anymore since it's been so long.

Re: Most Shocking Character Deaths
A bit obscure, but I would definitely have to go with:
The Twelve Kingdoms
Simply put, this is a character I had somehow grown to identify with and I was subsequently horrified and immensely depressed by the characters death.
The Twelve Kingdoms
- Spoiler:
Ikuya Asano
While it is true that he was not even in the original manga, I found his inclusion to be a good balance against the very imaginative world and his continued integration in the story greatly improved it in my opinion. Because he was not native to the Twelve Kingdoms he was therefore unable to understand or speak with anyone, and without Youko to guide him he lost all forms consistent moral and psychological support; essentially distorting his moral compass. His subsequent and gradual decent into insanity was a painful yet engaging experience, and his eventual redemption gave him even more character. His sudden death was a massive surprise and haunted me for days; It is one of the few times I have been depressed for a completely fictional character.

I've never read that, even though I have seen so many adaptations of it in many mediums.

Im not sure if you would enjoy the anime, but I for one loved it. It is more like a like a long novel than a traditional manga. Think Lord of the Rings meets Narnia.

That's what's made me hesitate. There are so many types of adaptations I don't even know where to go. I don't want to read a crappy version of it and possibly have it ruined. I've thought of just reading it in novel form.

Re: Most Shocking Character Deaths
From what I understand the core story remained the same even though they added characters and told them from a different perspective. If you don't mind a premature ending the anime would be well worth your time (If you like the kind of story and pacing it has, that is)

Re: Most Shocking Character Deaths
1. Final Fantasy VII.
2. Harry Potter
- Spoiler:
- Yes, I know it is over-talked about but I never saw her death coming and it punched me to the core. I actually stopped playing the game for a week after that had happened.
2. Harry Potter
- Spoiler:
- Fred Weasley's death. I did not see that coming in the least bit. In the books they make the twins so much more entertaining characters than they are in the movies and there is a lot more time spent with them. The way Fred dies - being crushed to death by stone after being hit with an explosion was seriously out of left field.
Re: Most Shocking Character Deaths
You're doing it wrong(not completely), mazar! Stawp ruining mah thread! D;
Try adding your reaction after the spoiler itself. The reason I like having that is because it could make someone get interested in something they may not know of otherwise.

- Spoiler:
- I was also saddened by that as well. Though the way death is treated in Harry Potter, I was disappointed that he did no come back as a ghost (Which I am sure would have been great for their shop)

Good, one of my goals is to spur interest and conversation. This could lead to discovery for anyone of us.

In theory...what we need is more members as well as conversations
Re: Most Shocking Character Deaths
Game of Thrones
1.
2.
Twin Peaks
1.
- Spoiler:
- Oberyn - While I read the books and I knew his death was coming, the way they portrayed it was so much more brutal than it was in the books.
2.
- Spoiler:
- Pyp and Grenn - As they didn't die in the books, it was a real shocker to me.
Twin Peaks
- Spoiler:
- Madeline Ferguson - Her death seemingly came out of the blue

Completely agree on the GoT ones. That brutality was surprising to me. Also, do you think the series is spoiling the books now, with those second ones?

Maybe, or it just could be the show runners changed it so that the battle had more loss.

Re: Most Shocking Character Deaths
Yeah, I suppose that's so. Not to mention that doing that with secondary characters wouldn't affect the overall story all that much. Still, I was sad at those.

Doubt it. They've already killed off other people earlier that never even came close to death in the books.
- Spoiler:
- Irri and Rakharo, even Dany's horse.
It's funny how people always go on about GRRM killing off characters, yet the show has killed off far more characters than he has at this point.
OT:
Obvious choice, but The Red Wedding.
- Spoiler:
- I had heard so much about The Red Wedding so I thought I was prepared for anything, but Robb was the absolute last character I expected to be killed off. I thought that after all the deaths during it, Robb would finally become a POV character. I literally put down the book in shock for a while but couldn't resist reading more later.

Re: Most Shocking Character Deaths
I am not sure if this was shocking to me or or just bad scripting, but none the less I did not see it coming.
Xam'd: Lost memories
It was a show that started off as one of my favorites and quickly lost my interest as its story diverged into abstract chaos.

- Spoiler:
- Furuichi killing himself. While I was a bit too confused in the story to really know what to think, it was a shock and came out of left field.

It's been a long time since I watched that show, but I feel that I would agree with you on that. Didn't it have a really strange ending?

Re: Most Shocking Character Deaths
Yes, though I would attribute it more to the fact that the story had completely fallen apart halfway through and the ending did its best to scoop the pieces into a not-so-neat pile. I have never seen a show fall apart to the extent that Xam'd did; it is as if they hung all the unfinished or half baked idea's they had on the wall and then threw darts at them to decide which ones they should implement into the story.

Re: Most Shocking Character Deaths
Hmmmmm can I say every death in Akame ga Kill? Lol? Don't worry I'll play along.
1. Akame ga Kill
1. Akame ga Kill
- Spoiler:
- I thought Chelsea was going to make it. She had it all down. She was getting some great character development, was really likable, smart, and a master at assassination. When she tracked down Kurome, everything was perfect; she did everything right and Kurome should have died, but who would have known that Kurome was immune to poisons? And the way Chelsea died.... fucking horrible.
