Well that was short...Turns out it was an OVA. I have to say I really really enjoyed it; I loved the animation and it was well put together. Granted I do have some personal complaints but I digress.

I'ts in my top 10 animes of all time. I think you would love it because it's very unconventional and there's a lot of care and detail put into all the characters, story, and setting. Togashi (the manga author) out done himself on this one.

Before I start bitching I first want to point that hunter x hunter (the show at least, never read the manga) does a lot of things right, so most of the complaints I have are nitpicks; as such I want to list a few of the things I really liked about the show:
-Great animation
-Good story arcs
-Memorable Characters
-Lack of "Fanservice"
-A dark yet lighthearted tone
- Nuke!
- Fantastic Epilogue(s)
It is a bloody crime that this show is not dubbed yet.

Right, my praise out of the way its time to nitpick and discuss! My first biggest complaint would be that some of the arcs drag on for far longer than they should. For the most part the were all paced well, but there were many times where my enjoyment of the show was vastly over shadowed by urge to say "Get on with it!" My second major complaint would be how many of the great side characters would be killed off with little to no shits given. If you spend the time to create a character and get someone invested in them yet still want to kill them off, the very least you could do is give some kind of closure on the matter.
These two complaints culminated in my favorite and least favorite chapter of the series, IE the Chimera Ants.
While It is honestly my favorite arc in the entire show, it takes way to longer than it should to complete itself. At many points it was dragged out to an outright unbearable degree. Likewise it killed off many of the side characters that I had grown to love without any form of closure or fanfare. In particular the deaths of ponzu and pokkle greatly irritated me. Meanwhile apparently every other nameless human that died got their own character in the form of a chimera ant. Perhaps this is just a personal grudge on my part, but I hate how nameless characters and villains get a thousand second chances, but established side characters and innocents get none.
But I digress, I loved the premise of the Chimera Ants, and I absolutely loved the more level headed soldier ants (Namely Colt and his companions) I also loved the later fights with the Ant King, however once again I feel that entire section was drawn out way to long. The only Royal guard member to show any sign of real character development was the brute, while the others either remained dicks or became an absolute nuisance. The most annoying part to me was the "Bliss/Chibby section" immediately after the chairman nuked Merium. It was exceedingly anti-climactic and clashed with the rest of tone. Likewise the following episodes in which the king had amnesia bored me to death; the nuke was the perfect point to start winding down to the epilogue, but pouf's constant the entire arc up to that point.
Once again, mostly nitpicks, but they did detract from my enjoyment of the show.

The Chimera Ant is the worst of all the arcs. The author is notorious for taking "breaks" when he gets bored with his work. From what I've read from other forums, he did the same thing with Yu Yu Hakasho. The guy is actually a really lousy person when it comes to his fanbase because he basically tells them to screw off.
If you followed the manga like I did, the Chimera ant arc lasted over 2 nd a half years for the Japanese version to finish (english translation is STILL being worked on to catch up) because he kept going on these 3-6 month "breaks". Hell, half of the fanbase in the forum I was following dropped the franchise.
He also started censoring it a lot adding huge black lines/splotches over most of the gore in the Ant saga.
His laziness is the primary reason the Ant arc suffered so damn much. I personally HATED the ant arc despite some cool moments.
The Greed Island is the best arc by far.
And if you think the Ant arc was bad, the Killuila escaping his brother to heal Gon arc is much shorter but just as idiotic thanks to a ton of complicated rules/Nen work.

I can actually understand authors taking breaks, as one of my favorite manga has been on perpetual breaks due to writer injury; though I did not realize that hunter x hunter was made by the same author as Yu Yu Hakashu.
As a whole the series has a much higher level of quality than most others that I have encountered, I am just very peeve about a few minor details.

Yup. However his "Breaks" are really him deciding to get lazy. It apparently helped ruin the Yu Yu manga as well :\
