Re: Gen Chat 9: THE HORROR!
*sighs* probably one of the roughest weekends in ages...
Left work at midnight to drive to California. Drive went beautiful but we had to stop because the lady's laptop didn't have a working DVD program so we had to use Mcdonalds to DL VLC so we could listen to the simpsons on the way down (helps us stay awake and pass time)
Got to her parents' house at 4am. Because of energy drinks/nitro pills, I couldn't sleep. Went to bed at 5, "woke" up at 9 to visit my friend but was 2 hrs late because of how groggy I was. Hung with her until 2pm, rushed to my other friend's house. Hung with him until 8'oclock until our other friend came over and became debbie downer with his attitude on everything. Left at 830, got a small pizza, checked out toysrus, then went back to in-laws home. Hung out with her dad a bit, watched Ash Vs Evil Dead - fun was had.
Saturday was spent shopping for last minute decorations, waiting on food from a busy diner, then we went to Hollywood Cemetery for a Rocky Horror showing. It was good but lady got sick, took us 2 hours to leave after the show because of her being sick, got home, discovered she didn't have house keys and had to wake her brother up (who was thankfully already awake making midnight snacks). And we all crashed.
I woke up at 8am but she was still feeling icky. Finally she got better around 10, didn't leave until 1045for the convention. Made it to the con at noon, rushed into the hall where the badges USED to be, found out they moved EVERYTHING to the other side of the !@#!@#!@ building...
Got the badges, made it to the All That Panel. I was able to meet my 2 voice actors I wanted to meet, then discovered 2 more actors/directors I was hoping to see were Saturday ONLY despite the !@#!@# website never saying such.
Then ONLY KEL from All That stayed for autographs. Everyone else LITERALLY !@#!@#!@@! LEFT AFTER 15 MINUTES SO I MISSED JOSH AND LORI BETH BOTH OF WHOM I WANTED TO SEE MORE THAN ANY OF THE OTHER CAST
Missed Legend because of this :'(
Left the con without really buying much but we did get to see some good people. Kel only charged 20$ for autograph AND photo which was awesome but because we got there so late the entire con was a rush.
Plus they put the actors in one hall, the showfloor in another which basically meant you had to run from one end of the facility to the other to go between the two.
Saw Jim Cummings again - amazing man as per usual. Passed on Erik Estrada only because I didn't know if I had money for him. My lady and her sister met the beautiful Dita Von Tease but we missed Stan Lee as per usual >.<
Missed Grumpy Cat, my Director from Versus, Missed Lori Beth, Missed Josh, missed Ray West and Ryuhei Kitamura because they never made it clear WHERE or WHEN they were going to be there. Really irritated me
Reading some of the comments on their facebook, I noticed that the Grumpy Cat thing was apparently a complete failure and some of the panels were badly handled and late? That's a shame. This place is usually more coherent.
And on the way home we discovered I left my favorite pillow at her parents' house...
*sighs* It's been a good weekend and a bad weekend all at the same time...Easily the least enjoyable con I've ever attended due to having to rush everywhere constantly...
First con I've attended where I didn't even buy a movie or anime...only the Merc with the Mouth comic book *sigh*

Re: Gen Chat 9: THE HORROR!
I probably have to watch it again, in a single and fully awake sitting, but the first 3rd of the movie just felt like filler. Even when it finally hits the middle, there's still a whole lot of nothing going on. The 2nd half of the movie is a little better but there didn't seem to be any sense of urgency with trying to find the alien at first. That and the way they just shot Kane's body out into space was dorky/silly as shit when it probably wasn't trying to be. Overall, the snail's pace that the film goes for did it no favors. It was just far too slow in the first 3rd, and even after that it still continued to just slowly crawl its way forward.TensePsychopath wrote:LegendX48 wrote:I have finally watched Alien for the first time ever (took 2 sittings cause I was drowsy as heck when I started it last night).

Won't disagree with the claims that it was ahead of its time though. For a 70s film, it certainly was ahead of its time for the period.
Regardless, I wouldn't call it great, even calling it "good" is kinda pushing it. I've heard Aliens is a lot better despite being an entirely different genre.
edit: You know what, that's likely the problem I had with the movie. For half the movie there is just nothing really going on. Then Kane dies, then a little bit more nothing, they jettison Kane's corpse in a silly manner, then more nothing, then they finally start planning to capture/kill the alien and the movie finally gets going.

Re: Gen Chat 9: THE HORROR!
It's called building intensity, atmosphere, and getting to know your characters. Alien was about Suspense more than anything else.
Re: Gen Chat 9: THE HORROR!
Agree with Mazer. I love the slow buildup and atmosphere. There's no effective tension if you just jump into the action right away.

That's what most of the newer Alien/Predator films have been - action. To me, the only good action version of Alien is the 2nd one because it follows the sequel rule of "Bigger, better, more". But Aliens follows ALIEN by focusing on story, suspense, and tension. The action is there yes but there are a lot of moments of down time where people are scared out of their minds and surrounded without knowing what will happen.
Horror movies today never introduce you to the characters. We just go in and start the killing.
The GREAT horror films (Conjuring, Sinister, Insidious) follow characters and give us more atmosphere and character development before actually getting into the horror.

...Wow....that...that really sums up things perfectly...
And why is no one commenting that I have a shout out from the one and only Don Carnage?
