it's because once you get past the first 15 eps or so you hit where the story starts and it's a fun ride with great characters, lots of little plot details, and good action/comedy.

It's often compared to dragonball in that sense, but a dragon ball that doesn't cater to current standards and thus allows powerful women, multiple minorities, same sex relationships, and loves to slip stuff past the censors like shows of old.

Avatar started out a bit more focused than steven universe but really though the first season steven universe isn't that far behind Avatar in terms of characters, lore, good action, good comedy ect. What Avatar did with asian mythology/settings steven universe is doing with gemstones.

and to be fair if tumblr was a thing back when Avatar was releasing I imagine it would have been obsessed with that as well

Tumblr has a fascination with Avatar also; but I see a HUGE flood of these very random posts/fanarts of SU and many don't seem to make sense....

well to be fair SU is still airing, Avatar is like a decade old now

but yeah a lot of the SU stuff is stuff you will only get if you watch the show and know the characters. or just random fan art... or garbage... as with anything with massive amounts of content like 95% of anything is garbage

Ignoring the tumbler stuff. Steven Universe is liked for pretty much the same reasons why people like Gravity Falls or the Legend of Korra. It has clever writing, fantastic visuals, and even some good gut wrenching moments. Also it has some pretty awesome songs.

to be fair it's not like the first 15 episodes are bad, they just aren't great.
beyond that it's sadly the state of cartoons right now, you have to have a certain feel in order to be able to get greenlit and only after you are established can you get the freedom to do more what you want.

beyond that the eps are only 11 min each thus it's more like getting through 7 eps of okay to get to solid stuff, which is actually a better clip than most shonen shows. I wouldn't say one piece gets good for like 35 episodes, naruto takes like 8 episodes, bleach takes like 13, hunter x hunter takes like 10, ect.

heck I would even say Avatar the last airbender takes like 15 episodes before it gets good as well, before that it's just a lot of random on offs that doesn't really grip you.


edit: though logically steven universe is a bit more like a magical girl show than it is a shonen show

to be fair there are very few shows that I consider good right from the start, and this includes a number of my favorites.

community is rather bleh for the first 7 or so eps
scrubs takes a half season to get good.
breaking bad takes like a half season to even get interesting. (not actually a favorite of mine but was actually enjoyable after I got through the horrid start)
Flash's first half isn't great compared to the second.
ect ect.

that establishing characters before jumping into a real stuff tends to bog down a lot of shows when they are starting.

I was like this with Paranoia Agent and Venture Brothers. They didn't grow on me until 4 episodes, and season 2 respectively.

so I am gonna cancel my yoshi preorder as soon as bestbuy works again. To many games I actually want to get a game I am only barely interested in.

also dragon quest warriors looks better than I expected


I kind of went on a media black out on it since I knew I would be buying it day one no matter the quality as I want DQ to start getting regular releases in english again :/

I am looking forward to Wooly world. Will be the 2nd Yoshi game I've ever purchased so I feel it'll be fresh and new to me again.
