I typically just use steam and google voice to talk to people.

saturdays I typically work in the morning and then do board games with people.
sunday I often work 9-5 and after words I spend time with my wife. for the summer the plan is to watch ABC's gameshow night from 7-10 pm which includes family feud, password, and match game.

It's the 29th and the AMD RX 480 benchmarks are out and............

wow is it disappointing. Like, wow, it just... it isn't what I was hoping for :\

It's a $200 (4gb) - $250 (8gb) gpu that was NEVER meant to be competitive with the Nvidia GTX 1070 (the official MSRP for the 1070 is $380, they sell for $500 shipped, good ol' Nvidia being Nvidia).

The RX 480 consumes ~170 watts of power under load despite being advertised as pulling a 150 watt max at its unveiling over a month ago (it actually puts a potentially bad strain on the motherboard by demanding more power straight through the pci-e slot it plugs into). The 1070 consumes less power for twice the performance and far less heat as well.

The 480 regularly loses against the 2 year old Nvidia GTX 970 (which it was meant to be competitive with) with very, very few exceptions. On the flipside, the 970 only has 3.5gb of vram vs the 480s 4gb or 8gb vram. Granted, the 970 has had 2 years for driver level optimization to give it the edge it currently has + the overclocked aftermarket versions used for testing vs the reference 480 that is available today that reviewers have.......


Bottom line, it's a disappointment that (currently) isn't capable of beating a 2 year old mid-medium high level gpu in the 970

It's a bit unfair to say, considering the aftermarket versions from Asus, MSI, Sapphire (etc) will definitely be better, but for a day 1 preview, things look bad especially since the aftermarket versions with good coolers are likely going to come out the exact same time that Nvidia launches the GTX 1060.

It's still a viable upgrade from an old AMD Radeon HD 7950, which is what I have, since an overclocked 7950 can only do low 20s to low 30 fps in witcher 3 on all ultra (minus Nvidia hairworks) whereas the 480 can apparently do high 40s to low 50s on the same settings...

Ugh, Guess I'll just save an extra $500 so I can get a 1070 next year



edit: One last bit of info, the 480 pushes 5.8 tera flops at stock which means it's likely going to be the gpu in the PS4K Neo and Xbone Scorpio.

Started to play The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel on PS3 today, I like it so far besides the lack of japanese voices. The english ones are alright but not in the quality of a Final Fantasy or Tales of.

Apparently one of my favorite STEAM games just got hit with a lawsuit from activision
